THAI RIDGEBACK DOG

ภาษาไทย

***Bruiser Service Dog ***

Bruiser, (my ridgeless Thai Dog), you can see a ridge if he's on guard, but other than that, there isn't one, it's not his hackles..as it runs the whole length of his back, like the saddle ridge.

I rescued Bruiser from a kill shelter on December 5, 2000 he was just three and a half months old. He became instant best friends with my now 12 year old Rhodesian Ridgeback (also ridgeless). He also became fast friends with my Basenji's, except for my male stud. So they've always been separated.

Bruiser is such a good dog, and we (me and my pack) became regulars at the local dog park, where Bruiser would entertain people by his silly ball chasing style. He would only chase a ball if I didn't throw it too far. He would also enjoy eating the bark right off of the trees.

As my health started to fail, I needed a dog that could help me cope with the day to day activities, and Bruiser was up for the challenge. I taught him many things, not all in hind sight were good ones. I taught him how to turn on the lights in the living room (easily gotten to, from the couch) and how to open doors. I also taught him "touch" and he will touch anyone who he wants a drink of what they are drinking (truly he uses this talent for his own benefit). I came home one day to find that Bruiser had let himself inside, and the inside dogs out in the fenced yard. Imagine my surprise, to come home and find my inside dogs out. Bruiser, greeted me happily at the door.

Bruiser started helping me in small ways, helping me to get off of low furniture, as my knees are bad from years of getting my knees knocked while barrel racing my horse. Then he started something that I had never taught him. When walking, my left leg will freeze and he knows to just place his body weight (paw) on the top of my foot, and it will unlock. It's amazing to me how he knew when this would happen.

I did all of the specific needed training for him to be my own personal Service Dog, a job that he takes with pride. He's great in restaurants, when I'm seated at a table he resides under the table, doesn't bother anyone while they are eating. He goes to me with to Church and he's good about that too. He's even great in the Supermarket, he never sticks his nose where it shouldn't be, it's actually rather funny how excited he gets in the pet food isle, and not the meat department.

Bruiser also helps me to deal with large crowds of people as I suffer from Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, he is a natural calming, whenever I feel panicky, it's amazing how her will, read me, and place his head under my hand, letting me know that it is ok, and that everything is all right. In October of 2004 he proved to me what a superb Service Dog really is!!!!

!!! Beyond the Call of Duty !!!

10/02/04 (Saturday) afternoon, Bruiser, my Service Dog (ridgeless, Thai Ridgeback), went above and beyond the call of duty, not only as a Service Animal, but as a faithful companion. True to his instinct he saved my life from a deadly rattle snake (Eastern Massasauga) bite.

I was out looking at farm property in a rural part of Ohio, the grass was tall and the farm I was looking at had not been bush hogged for quite sometime. While walking on the property, towards one of the small barns, I was looking around thinking of where I could build my climate controlled kennel, looking at the lay of the land, and enjoying the crisp fall weather.

I started to open the barn door, when Bruiser, stepped in front of me placing his body between me and the snake. Bruiser, pushed me with his weight away from the coiled snake, it was only then that I heard the slight rattling of the snakes tail. He pushed me out of harms way, just prior to the snake striking. I had almost stepped on the snake, if it hadn't been for Bruiser, I would have been bitten, and lord only knows what would have happened since we were no where near a hospital.
The snake was about 3 feet long, not a big snake, but still poisonous, Bruiser saved my life. He's always been more than a Service Dog to me, more than a Faithful Companion, he's truly my Guardian Angel.
